“I hope OUC will continue to support us in solving problems related to inefficient maritime law enforcement, improving the protection and utilization of marine resources and better safeguarding China’s maritime rights and interests,” said the deputy head of the SOA, who is also the chief of China Coast Guard, when he visited OUC on July 19.

The cooperative relations between OUC and SOA should be further strengthened in view of the fact that the prvious collaborative activities have proved to be successful, said Vice Administrator Meng.

At the meeting with the SOA delegation on the Yushan campus, President Wu Dexing gave an overview of OUC. He said OUC, a nearly 90 year-old comprehensive university, boasts its strength in oceanography and fisheries science.

Over the years, OUC has graduated a large number of topnotch professionals in marine science and technology, and many of them are now taking important administrative or research positions at such national agency as the SOA, said President Wu.

“We have a strong team here at OUC comprising experts and scholars who are engaged in the study of marine-related laws and regulations, protection of maritime rights and interests as well as marine culture and history. And we would like to make our due contribution to China’s marine programs, in cooperation with the SOA and its coast guard forces,” President Wu added.

According to Vice Administrator Meng, the SOA has been restructured to bring China's maritime law enforcement forces, that used to be scattered among different ministries, under the unified management of a single administration. The regrouped agency now has under its control the coast guard forces of the Public Security Ministry, the fisheries law enforcement command of the Agriculture Ministry and the maritime anti-smuggling police of the General Administration of Customs.

The visiting delegation, consiting of Major General Wang Hongguang, commander of Yunnan Frontier Corps of the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force and Mr. Zhou Maoping, the former sectretary of the SOA’s Discipline Inspection Commission, and Mr. Jia Jianjun, political commissar of China Marine Surveillance, as well as heads of the South China Sea Branch of the SOA, Shandong Provincial Department of Public Security and Shandong Frontier Corps of the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force, also paid a visit to OUC’s Key Laborotary of Physical Oceanography under the Ministry of Education.

Also present at the meeting from the OUC side were Vice President Yu Yifa, Deputy Party Chief Zhang Jing, Vice President Li Weiran,Vice President Li Huajun and Assistant President Chen Rui as well as heads of Publicity Department, Office of Educational Administration, Office for Projects 211 and 985, Research Vessel Center and College of Physical and Environmental Oceanography.
