Up to 120 students from over 50 key high schools in 13 provinces and municipalities across China arrived at Ocean University of China (OUC) to sign up for the fifth Ocean Summer School which kicked off on July 31, 2013 at the Laoshan campus.【Click here to see the Chinese version】

At the launching ceremony, Vice President Li Weiran delivered a welcoming speech to all the participants of the summer school before giving them an overview of OUC. He also presented each group leader an Ocean Summer School flag.

According to Vice President Li, the Ocean Summer School at OUC aims to provide teenagers with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of oceans, enhance their ocean awareness and help them establish a correct outlook on the ocean, so that they will be in a better position in the future to make their due contribution to building China into a strong ocean country.

“We are so pleased to be here to learn marine knowledge and to know more about OUC’s history and culture and increase our ocean awareness,” said a participant in the summer school.

After the ceremony, which was also attended by a representative of OUC’s counselors and Mr. Liu He, director of Admissions Office, a talk with the topic of “Expedition to the Polar Ocean” was given by Professor Shi Jiuxin with College of Physical and Environmental Oceanography.

During the week-long summer school, participants will attend various presentations on marine-related topics while collecting, categorizing and making marine biological samples. They will also have the chance to take a campus tour, visiting laboratories, including Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanography under the Ministry of Education and Lab for Recreational Physics as well as the Exhibition Hall of the University History, and the Exhibition Hall for Education in China’s Maritime Rights and Interests.

The participants will also visit the Qingdao Polar Ocean World, Tsingtao Brewery Museum and Qingdao Naval Museum. In addition, they will participate in marine knowledge contests and other interesting and meaningful activities.

First launched in 2009, the Ocean Summer School at OUC has now become a very popular summer program among high school students in China.
